With health reform looming, 2011 found a record number of hospitals giving in to the consolidation trend. By merging or affiliating with broader organizations, many of these facilities hope to fulfill federal mandates that aim to lower the spiraling cost of health care in the US market.

According to this HealthLeaders article, hospital mergers in 2011 were valued at some $7.3 billion, out of $236 billion of total health care-related M&A activity during the year. As long as the fundamentals of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act remain unchanged by legislative bodies, strong M&A activity is expected in 2012 as well.
