Global car renter Hertz has named John Tague as its new president and CEO. A veteran of the travel and transportation industry, his resume includes leadership roles at United Airlines and UAL Corporation (prior to the merger with Continental), Cardinal Logistics, ATA Holdings, and Midway Airlines. Tague has also served on the boards of Choice Hotels, Reddy Ice, Pacer International, and Orbitz International, as well as United Airlines.

In an update last week, D&B Editor Tim Green noted the “explosive” growth of IT services provider Cognizant Technology Solutions. Revenue and profit both rose about 20% in 2013, hitting historic milestones of $8.8 billion and $1.2 billion, respectively. The results come amid increasing demand for offshore IT software and services and business process outsourcing (most of Cognizant’s employees and development centers are in India). The company is seeking long-term growth by targeting the Middle East and Asia/Pacific regions, specifically Japan, India, Australia, and Singapore. Follow Tim on Twitter.

Faced with a growing number of travelers, airports are increasing their investments in self-service technologies to streamline passenger movement. More than 75 percent of airports expect the majority of their passengers to use self-service check-in by 2017, according to a recent survey.
