The majority of Panera Bread units employ a quick counter service model, but the company plans to add more table-delivery restaurants. The chain currently offers table service at about 130 of its more than 660 company-owned bakery cafes and at about 215 locations throughout its 1,500-unit system. Executives hope the table service will differentiate the chain from competitors like La Madeleine, Starbucks, The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, and Einstein Bros. Bagels.
Taking the #5 spot is Michael McLellan’s post on Panera Bread’s expansion plans. As our infographic in the #3 spot explains, the bakery-cafe segment of the restaurant industry is rising faster than the freshly baked bread frequently served. At the top of this group is Panera Bread, which has a devoted customer base and a management team ready to employ new tactics and products to continue its aggressive national expansion.

The company not only has competition from Amazon and its Kindle Fire, it also competes with that other 800-pound gorilla in the marketplace, Apple and its iPad. Barnes & Noble has been selling the Nook through its physical bookstores, but that may be difficult if it doesn’t have bookstores in Europe.
