Social media forum Reddit has a new CEO: its old CEO, Steve Huffman. Ellen Pao resigned last week amid increasing controversy over offensive content versus freedom of speech. Reddit has subreddits that have hosted racist and sexist propaganda, hate speech, and even disturbing photos sometimes involving minors. Reddit’s 170 million regular monthly users have historically reacted very strongly to any hint of censorship. Huffman is trying to strike a compromise by allowing offensive speech but banning threats, doxing, harassment, any illegal activity, and suggestive images of underage subjects. He has the challenges of enforcing these new regulations with an army of volunteer moderators while also growing Reddit’s user base and monetizing its product.
