The emerging consumer market for virtual and augmented reality devices could provide computer peripheral equipment makers with their next major growth opportunity. More than 24 million virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) devices are expected to be sold in 2018, generating revenue of more than $4 billion, according to a forecast released by CCS Insight in June 2015. Used in conjunction with specialized software, VR headsets allow users to experience immersive, computer-simulated environments. A related technology, AR, creates virtual objects in the real world.
